"Makes you feel squirmy and defensive, doesn’t it?"

More squirmy and creeped out because something way bigger than me is fucking with my perspective, my views, my ideals, my morals, my ethics and a lot of things that I hold dear to myself and turning me into a tool of oppression for a lot of people (not just people of color).

Maybe a tiny, less obvious tool, but a tool nevertheless. And that is an unpleasant feeling.

It's a bit late in the day to be replying, but what the heck--it's an eye-opener. Especially the part where I was getting all defensive and thinking, "I refuse to shoulder guilt as long as I shoulder my personal responsibility!" And then I read the commentary, and duh, that's exactly what you're saying. It's not about personal guilt so much as it's about personal, and collective, responsibility.
If I may risk an analogy, I would say that in my understanding of it now, the system of racism can be compared to global warming and carbon footprints--there's a basic carbon footprint that none of us can escape, called breathing, which doesn't absolve anyone of the responsibility to mitigate the other ways in which one impacts the world.
Thanks. :)
